They really don't. I came to realize this about east Aisians when I once had a tour in Daiso shops (Japanese), one gets amazed of their small inventions for EVERY thing, inventions that are handy and have never ever come to your mind.
I lived in Asia pacifc for few years and yes they are practical and innovative even without goods, thier ideas on how to handle situations are amazing too.
